Spring Organizing
Spring Makeover Time!
It’s the season to evaluate what actually resides in your home other than you! If you are feeling like you don’t have enough space in a specific room or closet, the best thing to do is go through the items, group “like with like”. Then ask yourself:
- Have I used the item recently?
- Do I get great joy from the item (such as a figurine on your mantle)?
- Am I holding on to it just in case I may use it?
- Am I saving it because someone special gave it to me but I really don’t have a use for it?
We constantly tell clients there are many worthwhile charities that love receiving donations and oftentimes knowing that your belongings are going to someone who truly needs and wants them is rewarding in its own right. I recently attended a networking meeting where someone told me about her father who had passed and had been an avid sailor. She found a home for all of his sailing charts and memorabilia at a local ship museum where they would be appreciated, and she had joy knowing her dad’s treasured belongings had found a good home. One of our clients had us help clear out belongings after her mother passed. When we made a trip to one of our local charities in the area, they did not accept a walker. We brought it over to a nursing home, and when the aid saw what we were hoping to donate, she commented, “that’s not just a walker, that’s a mercedes of walkers!” Needless to say, they were thrilled by the donation and so was the client. When it’s time to let go of some of your belongings, remind yourself that by doing so you will bring joy to not only yourself, but others as well.
