Declutter

We just gave a presentation on kitchen organizing at Brooksby Village to help those that are downsizing and moving in. I thought it would be helpful to share some of our tips and checklists on our blog. If you are thinking of moving, it is never too early to start de-cluttering. In order to so, make an appointment with yourself. Mark a designated amount of time on your calendar. We usually suggest a two hour window to eliminate the burn-out factor. Schedule the time slot so you have no interruptions: yes, that means no answering the phone, no calls to your family to see if they want an item you’ve uncovered, and no wandering to the computer to quickly check e-mails. Think of it like anything else you do whether it be exercising or having lunch with a friend, treat it as a commitment and not as something you had just hoped to accomplish that day. Once you start the process, sort like with like and you’ll be amazed at how many vases you might have. Or, how many coffee mugs. By setting them all out on a table, you can quickly see what your favorites are, and what you can donate to someone else who will love finding that vase at a local thrift store or charitable organization. Remember, there is someone on the end of the donation who will truly enjoy the item you’re donating! Set up a time for your favorite charity to pick up the items that way you’ll have another date on your calendar with an end goal in sight!
Good Luck and we’ll share our unpacking tips in the next blog, as well as kitchen organizing tools that we like.
